In short:

On a separate ticket itinerary, the company of the first flight is legally released from any responsibility for your missed correspondence.

  • Legal status: Two separate booking numbers (PNRs) make flights completely independent according to the European Commission.
  • Legal refund: The carrier of the canceled flight must return 100% of the ticket price within 7 days (Article 8 of EC Regulation No 261/2004).
  • Fixed allowances: You can claim €250 (≤ 1,500 km), €400 (1,500 to 3,500 km) or €600 (> 3,500 km outside EU).
  • Support: Meals, refreshments and free hotel if a night of waiting is on site.

The legal vacuum of reservations with separate PNRs

Buying two separate tickets from low-cost companies saves on the price of the trip, but creates a break in legal protection. According to the European Commission, two separate flights booked separately under two different passenger file (PNR) numbers are treated as two autonomous transport contracts. If the first flight undergoes a major cancellation or delay, the first carrier has no obligation to resettle you on the second route or to compensate for its loss.

In this scenario, you must manage the problem along two axes: save what can be for your second trip (option A) and require the strict application of the European regulation from the first company (option B).

Option A: React immediately at the airport to limit breakage

As soon as the cancellation of the first flight is announced, your priority is to mitigate the financial impact on the second unsecured journey.

On the first flight, require the application of the right to assistance provided by the European Commission. The carrier must provide you with free refreshments, catering and accommodation in the hotel if a postponement to the next day is necessary. Immediately request a written cancellation certificate at the company’s counter.

For the second flight, immediately notify the operating company before the initially scheduled departure. If the ticket is modifiable (even with charges), shift the departure. In the event of a non-refundable rate, ask for at least the reimbursement of airport taxes, which must be returned when the passenger does not board.

Option B: Get refund and legal post-travel compensation

The cancellation of your first flight entitles you to financial reparations supervised by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union via Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. These compensations concern only the canceled flight itself.

Article 8 of the Rules imposes a full refund within 7 days of the canceled ticket if you waive the trip. At the same time, a lump-sum compensatory indemnity is due, except in the event of extraordinary circumstances proven by the company:

  • €250 per passenger: For all flights of 1,500 km or less.
  • €400 per passenger: For intra-Community flights of more than 1,500 km and all other routes between 1,500 km and 3,500 km.
  • €600 per passenger: For non-Community flights of more than 3,500 km.

How to force the payment in the event of the company’s refusal?

If the low-cost company refuses to pay the legal indemnity or is late in refunding the ticket exceeded the 7-day period, initiate a graduated procedure.

First address a formal written complaint to the carrier’s customer service, attaching the evidence (Download card, cancellation certificate, hotel or meal bills). If you do not obtain a satisfactory answer after a period of 60 days, you can re-enter the file for free with the Médiation Tourisme et Voyage (MTV). The maximum period for making this referral is 12 months from your first complaint letter.

At the same time, if the canceled flight were to operate from the French territory, report directly the non-compliance with Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 to the Directorate General for Civil Viation (DGAC), the national authority responsible for sanctioning defaulting carriers.
